Hilbre Island from West Kirby

Wednesday 10 January

Hilbre is part of the Dee Estuary RAMSAR site, designated as a wetlands wildlife conservation area of international importance.  At this time of the year there are large numbers of geese and waders overwintering in the area, we may see 1000’s of birds if the weather conditions are right although the highest concentrations of birds will be in the  2 or 3 hours before high tide.  We will be back at West Kirby before then.   Go to  http://www.deeestuary.co.uk/hilbre/plan.htm and http://www.deeestuary.co.uk/hilbre/hilbirds.htm  for more information.
Bring a drink and a bite to eat if you wish to have something on Hilbre, But I will arrange for those who want to to go to Tanskeys on South Parade in West Kirby after the walk.  This has proved popular in recent times and I took a U3A birdwatching group there a couple of weeks ago, they all enjoyed it (and no, I don’t get commission in any form).

Meet at Village car park in Church Lane for lift sharing, leaving at 09:30.  The drive to the promenade (South Parade) alongside the Marine Lake in West KIrby takes about 35 minutes (c. 25 miles)  There is free parking all along the South Parade bordering the Marine lake and a Pay & Display car park on the left just before the left turn onto South Parade.  Recommend using the M53 up to Junc 2 then up to Junc 2A onto A5027 first right at traffic lights onto B5192 Saughall Massey Road, B5139 and finally A540 into West Kirby, following West Kirby signs from the motorway.  Beware going all the way from Chester up the A540, you are almost certain to get stuck in traffic through Heswall

Walk start at 10:15 latest
