Guilden Sutton Community Association was set up in 1980 with two stated objectives: To promote the benefit of the inhabitants of Guilden Sutton, Piper Ash and the neighbourhood, without distinction of sex or of religious, political or other opinions, to advance education and to provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation and leisure time occupation with the object of improving the conditions of life of the said inhabitants and to provide facilities for the social welfare, recreation or leisure time occupations of those inhabitants. To establish or to secure the establishment of a village hall. A Village Hall for activities promoted by the Association. Both these objectives have been and remain the centre around which the Association is run.

What does it do?

The Association organises activities in and about the village and the Village Hall. After several years of community fundraising events it eventually built our Village Hall which was opened by the Duke of Westminster in 1984, and is now managed by the Hall Management Committee. The Association has been very successful in improving and extending the Hall. It also maintains its car park, grass and shrubs around the Hall.

In the village, the Association organises the village lottery, arranges an annual village quiz, provides the facilities for the annual Sutton Six and Fun Runs and prints a local newsletter 3 times a year - the Marigold. Other social activities have been arranged in previous years, such as a Caribbean Evening, Valentines Dance and wine tasting, but these have fallen off lately because of a lack of an organiser. The Association also speaks on behalf of the village to various interested bodies, for example Cheshire West and Cheshire council, and always seeks to promote the village and its inhabitants. It is a convenient way of contacting a number of organisations that use the Hall and the Association acts as an intermediary between these groups and the Councils as well as canvassing the views of the village through the Association’s members.

Is it like our Parish Council?

No. Our Parish Council is an elected statutory body, part of the local government network and linked to the City and County Councils. It is financed through Council Tax, levied through an annual precept on all households in the Civil Parish. The Community Association is a group of volunteers who meet and work to progress the interests of the village. It is solely financed by fund raising activities, by the village lottery, by the surplus generated by the Hall, and by voluntary contributions. It is set up as a registered charity and does not pay out money to any employees or officers. Two main committees run it, · An Executive Committee who oversees the general activities of the Association, including running the lottery, arranging social functions, managing the major items of expenditure, such as the Marigold Room extension, and takes a view on the policy decisions affecting the Association. Members are elected to this committee at the Annual Meeting held in May. A Hall Management Committee, who looks after the day to day management of the Village Hall. This is composed of a representative from each of the various groups who use the Hall and they decide on the everyday matters, which affect the Hall and the User Groups.

How can I help?

Village Quiz The Village Quiz takes place in the Spring, usually in March or April. It is organised on a team basis, with teams of 6 people pitting their wits against our Quizmaster, Al Christmas. A first class platter is provided for supper, and a bar is open for the sale of several wines, beer, lager and soft drinks. The winners receive some thirst quenching prizes.

The Village Lottery (Lottery Registration No: 19/80)

More than twenty years ago, we started our lottery to assist with the fundraising for the construction and upkeep of the Village Hall. It is still successfully in operation today, providing a valuable contribution to the Village Hall funds. A weekly stake of only 25p buys a number for entry into the draw which takes place every three months. Prizes start at £100 for the first number drawn, with other prizes ranging down to £10. Stake money is collected regularly by local area representatives, or can be paid direct by Standing Order. A form can be obtained from the promoter. We need to replace original members who have left the village, so if you are interested in supporting this venture as well as the chance of winning a prize then please complete a Standing Order form which you can obtain from our promoter, John Riley (Tel 300849), who can also give you further details about the lottery.

Marigold Newsletter

The Marigold is published by the Community Association, and distributed to every house in the village three times a year. It is edited by John Beavan, who does an excellent job preparing a six page magazine telling us all what is happening in the village, and who all the local contacts are. This includes all the various voluntary groups who meet in the Village Hall and the other halls in the village, plus the names of the Parish, City and County Councillors, and other handy-to-know names.
